10 Things to Teach Your Son Before 12

Being a parent is one of the most fulfilling things that you can ever become. This is why it is important that you are able to teach your child certain significant lessons in life; important lessons that will enable him to be the best person that he can be in the future.

As for me, I would want to teach my child these important lessons as soon as possible. As they say, you can’t teach old dogs, new tricks right? So I want to start him young. That way, he will be able to imbibe the lessons that I would teach much more easily.

10 Things I Want My Son to Learn Before He Turns 12

Here are some of those lessons as follows:

1. Love

Love for himself, love for others and his country. I want to have him learn that, doing something out of love makes everything even more meaningful.

I plan to do this by showing him just how much I love the people around me. I want to show him that I am willing to do everything in my power to keep them safe and happy always.

2. Hope

This is another lesson that I need to teach my child. I want him to know that there’s always hope for a brighter tomorrow. As Annie says in the song, “The sun will come out tomorrow!” This means that no matter how bleak or dark the present may be, the sun will always shine the next day and you will have a brand new day to make things right.

3. Courage

I want to teach him that he should not be afraid of anything. As long as he is doing things for the right reasons and he is not hurting anyone, then he should continue living his life to the fullest.

4. Strength

The strength of character is not easy to teach. This can only be taught by example. In this regard, I would teach my child to be strong by showing him just what it means to be strong for the family and for the people who will go on to rely on him in the future.

5. Respect

By respecting myself as his parent and as an individual, I can show him that he should not settle for anything less in life. He should always exude dignity in whatever he does no matter how simple it may be.

6. Acceptance

By being positive about everything in life, I can teach my child how to be accepting of every situation no matter how “bad” it may seem. This is because there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel and everything else will turn out for the best eventually.

7. Kindness

By not being violent and striving to be tolerant of others, I can show this value to my child. I can also exemplify kindness by sharing what I have with others.

8. The Value of Silence

I want to teach my child that sometimes, it is best just to keep quiet rather than be part of the noise in the crowd. That way, people will end up paying more attention to what you have to say when you say it.

9. Positivity

I also want him to learn the value of being positive. It is not about looking at life through rose-colored glasses. It is about seeing the good in people and in every situation in turning that into something productive that could improve his life in the near future.

For example, people with disabilities may seem weak and useless, but if you meet them you’ll find that most of them are extremely productive and intelligent individuals. It’s just a matter of treating them the same as any other people.

That way, you will help them get through adversity much more effectively.

10. Hard Work

This is one of the most important lessons that I want my son to learn before he turns 12. I want him to know that nothing comes easy in life. You have to strive for what you want in order to get it. If you work hard to get what you want, you will better appreciate the value of the prize.

You will then take care of it even more.

Final Words

There are many other things I would want to teach my child for sure. However, I believe that I still have a lot of time left to train my child in the way that he should go. As soon as I have faith in God and the belief that I can do right by my children in the future, I will be able to teach them what they need to know without any problems.

The important thing is that I am able to be the best parent that I can be for my child. Everything else will follow for sure.
